Black Lips stack up newfound colors and textures across their sixth studio album, 2011’s Arabia Mountain. These sprawling 17 tracks are bursting with vivid extras, including squealing theremin on “Modern Art” and honking sax on “Family Tree” and “Mad Dog.” But there’s also surprising sweetness peeking through the Atlanta band’s thick shag carpet of garage punk: “Dumpster Dive” is an achy, “Dead Flowers”-style country lament, while “Spidey’s Curse” weaves Byrds-y jangle through an affecting study of young Peter Parker.
