18 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

The soundtrack to one of 2019’s most hotly-anticipated Bollywood films brings together India’s brightest and most indefatigable voices for a triumphant collection of desi hip-hop. As the titular Gully Boy, Ranveer Singh spits his way through much of the project’s high-octane tracks. His rhymes on “Apna Time Aayega” are particularly catchy. DIVINE, one of the film’s inspirations, caustically addresses societal inequality on “Azadi”, and there are some refreshingly diverse beats on the multilingual cipher “India 91” and producer Dub Sharma’s sample-heavy bass track “Jingostan”. Ranveer, DIVINE and Naezy—another real-life Gully Boy inspiration—bring street cred to “Mere Gully Mein”. However, the folksy “Jahaan Tu Chala” and cinematic “Train Song” add a different energy that only augments this dynamic look at Mumbai’s hip-hop scene.
