When Bloody Civilian released her debut single, “How to Kill a Man,” in late 2022, it confirmed her star-in-waiting status. That reputation was forged thanks to her showings on “Cold Freestyle” off NATIVE Sound System’s NATIVEWORLD as well as “Wake Up,” a collab with Afropop star Rema, for the soundtrack of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Another single, “I Don’t Like You,” further expanded on the Abuja-based singer’s upbeat sound, which blurs the line between Afrobeats, dance, and R&B to stunning effect. Bloody Civilian’s debut EP Anger Management is a distillation of the singer and producer’s shape-shifting soundscape as well as her reflection on self, country, and the world around her as it evolves. Project opener “Escapism” is true to topic, building on a desire to escape from every limiting factor in her life while speaking candidly about the dire socioeconomic conditions of her country.
