EDITORS’ NOTES

Good Grief is built to make you move. The sophomore album from eclectic New Yorkers Lucius bubbles with kinetic energy. “Almighty Gosh” surges forth with frantic percussion and ’80s-inspired synths, while the explosive “Something About You” thumps along to an unforgettable chorus. But the band take a few breathers between the glitzy indie pop numbers (see: the dramatic “My Heart Got Caught On Your Sleeve” and folk-inflected, windswept “Dusty Trails”), making Good Grief as well-suited to your living room as the dance floor.

Preliminary results are very promising

"Born Again Teen" is a great song and a perfect first single–it's peppy, dancey, and the exuberant da da das of the chorus evoke the special form of mania that sets in early in a relationship. I also heard them play a new song which I'm hoping will be on the album at Boston Calling this year. It reminded me a lot of Emmy Lou in her Red Dirt Girl period, and I'm hoping for more of this as singles get released!

Based on 4 early releases, an incredible follow up album

If the first four tracks are any indication, Lucius has surpassed their wonderful debut album. Dusty Trails is stunningly beautiful and haunting. The band melds American roots with tinges of Bon Iver overlaid with layers of perfect harmony. The other songs range from lush ballads to spun candy pop evoking the energy of Prince and Madonna in their prime.

I’ve been listening to this for a week or so and it gets better with each listen.
