Ani DiFranco remains an independent voice in the music world, evolving sound-wise in true organic fashion. Living in New Orleans has strengthened her interests in rhythm and jazz (see “Harder Than It Needs to Be”) without losing herself in the process. Ivan Neville joins her here on Wurlitzer organ, clavinet, and piano. Jenny Scheinman provides violin, while DiFranco's backing band includes longtime bassist Todd Sickafoose and drummer extraordinaire Terrence Higgins. Recorded in two four-day sessions, the album ranges from the spiritual pop of “Woe Be Gone” to the existential acoustic folk of the title track. DiFranco never shies from the emotional complexity that’s made her an important artist.
