All Things Light

Cam

This fourth studio album from Cam opens with a powerful statement. Opening track “Turns Out That I Am God,” which draws its thought-provoking title from a talk by the late spiritual writer and philosopher Alan Watts, finds the acclaimed singer-songwriter seizing control of her own life and encouraging listeners to do the same. Such heady themes abound on All Things Light, the follow-up to 2020’s The Otherside and Cam’s first solo project since contributing vocals, production, and songwriting to Beyoncé’s groundbreaking album COWBOY CARTER. Early single “Alchemy” gets trippy, with dizzying vocal harmonies and slightly discordant guitar playing off one another as Cam considers natural wonders like “patterns in the grass” and the cycle of “dust to flesh to bones to dust” that makes up human mortality. Other highlights include “Kill the Guru!,” a dark and dusky rebuke of new age grifters with easy answers, and “Hallelujah,” a deeply searching portrayal of seeking truth and light in a world gone mad.
