EDITORS’ NOTES

TLC’s 1992 debut opens with an unidentified male grousing that the girl group’s baggy clothes aren’t ladylike. The Atlanta trio retorts with “Hat 2 da Back,” an urban-soul single that positions their style not as a denial of femininity, but an assertion. Such liberation characterizes this groundbreaking album, a new jack swing classic of R&B vocals and breakbeat samples that redefines womanhood with tracks like “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg,” a hip-hop shout-along that advances female sexual agency; “His Story,” a listen-to-the-victim op-ed; and “What About Your Friends,” a formative work of swaying-pop sorority.

A true classic of its time!

These ladies have proven themselves to be ground breakers from this album all the way through to the last! A true package of entertainment: humorous, insightful, shocking, and real. I miss these times. I miss the colors, the fun, this music and of course Left Eye. This album set it off for me and many of the artists we see today. Many of us came of age to this music this was the soundtrack to our teenage lives. I mean, What About Your Friends is still ringing true for me 18 years later!
TLC you gave us this delight and I must say well done ladies....truly well done!

Now this album...this is how it should be done!

The Best to Ever Do It

I may be young, but I have a 90's soul. This album is entertaining from beginning to end. Wish we had music like this still. "What About Your Friends," "Somethin' You Wanna To Know," and "Conclusion" have got to be my favorites with all the songs close behind.
