5 Songs, 17 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Interpol’s latest EP collects five songs that didn’t make final cut for their sixth full-length album, Marauder. But these are not just scrapped leftovers—on A Fine Mess, the New York City indie-rock trio forges a sonic cohesion that is consistent with the live-to-tape approach of their recording sessions between late 2017 and early 2018. Lead singer Paul Banks quickly lets out a distorted vocal line on the title track—paired with Daniel Kessler’s razor-sharp riffs—refusing even a second of space to loosen its airtight, vigorous groove. The forceful “Real Life” and “The Weekend”—the former of which they’ve played live as far back as 2017—capture the band at their loosest, giving us a closer look into their pure, unrehearsed energy.

Oh yes

The Weekend sings to me!!!!

HEY BRO! WHAT UP? ,

Fine Mess should’ve made the cut

In fact, it should’ve been the lead single. The Weekend was the only other song I liked.
