Van Halen and David Lee Roth certainly don’t ease back into things on their first album in 28 years. They go full throttle, unleashing “Tattoo,” a revival of the classic onslaught of Diamond Dave’s absurdist glitz and Eddie’s beastly swells and shrieking harmonics, and “As Is,” a metal fever dream that’s powered by Alex’s timber-chopping drums. They come up for air only on “Stay Frosty,” a ridiculously infectious, manic blues-rock jam in the vein of “Ice Cream Man.”
