Though not her biggest-selling album, Amy Grant’s Lead Me On is arguably her best, and twenty years after its release a two-disc version of this pivotal work invites a fresh appreciation. With Lead Me On, Grant convincingly proved that a Christian music star could reach a mainstream audience while remaining true to her core beliefs. Balancing personal confessions (“Faithless Heart,” “Shadows”) with socially-conscious observations (“What About the Love” and the title track), the album frames Grant’s confident yet vulnerable vocals with arrangements combining folk instrumentation with synthesized backdrops. Augmenting the original album are newly-recorded acoustic versions of “Lead Me On” (featuring Vince Gill on guitar), “Faithless Heart” (with Michael W. Smith on keyboards,) and “Say Once More,” along with five tunes recorded on tour in 1988. The contrasts between the recordings from two decades ago and today are poignant and revelatory — the youthful fire displayed in Grant's earlier performances has been replaced by a more mature approach.
