7 Songs, 24 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

GOT7 is known for musical experimentation, and 7 for 7 feels like a culmination of their best work. Building on the electro-R&B of previous EPs from their Flight Log trilogy, there's a little something for everyone: the soaring "You Are," the bouncy hip-hop of "Teenager," and euphoric standout "Firework" all feature the uplifting melodies the band is known for. But they still explore the melancholy of 2015's "If You Do" in the stunning album closer, "Face."

Got7's passion project pays off

I'll be honest, I've been much more of a fan of Got7 as people than as a music group so far; JYP picked a bunch of guys who have huge musical talent and energetic presence, then only let them dabble on writing and producing their own songs. They've been mainly focused on commercial success thru tried-and-true pop music methods up to this point and they've done exceedingly well at it. That isn't enough to make me feel connected to their music tho. I may not have given this album a chance if I didn't fall in love with JB's solo stuff.

This album is what happens when you combine talent, experience and the resources of a big production company. I can hear the members' perspectives clearly, their influence and unique flavor that is too often subservient to safely successful pop hits. In an era of Kpop where bangers and ballads are the only things that get funded, an entire album based around the concept of these boys' bond with each other and what they truly want to say to their audience is a risk. And I love it.

Got7 stans are ride or die at this point, this review isn't really for them. I guess I just wanted a chance to say that true artistry is emerging from Got7 on a level that actually made me buy my first album from them. They're really finding a way to balance their genuine selves with the shiny polish that is demanded from Idols and I am so here for it. I hope they are incredibly proud of what they made here.

Solid Album

Seriously this is a really solid album and probably my favorite got7 album of all time! It's going to be on repeat for months. See? this is the result of allowing the members to have full creative control over their album. 5/5!
