Jaden—more widely known as Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett, brother of Willow—has always presented himself as a student. His projects have been infused with heady concepts and narratives that flow in and out of songs. His 2024 EP, titled 2024: A Case Study of the Long Term Effects of Young Love, is similarly thematic with Jaden examining, well, the effects of young love. ““Roses”” is a slow-burning R&B jam that is charming in its homespun vulnerability and bedroom-DIY aesthetics. Over fingerpicked guitar, Jaden sings: “Roses/Left them at your door ’cause I was hoping/They would lead you home tonight ’cause I/Don’t sleep unless you’re by my side.” He’s neither heartbroken nor head over heels, but like the title suggests, curious as to why he is feeling the emotions he can’t ignore.
