Legends

The Dutch violinist Gwendolyn Masin examines her family’s musical connections on Legends, with a team of soloists from her annual GAIA festival in Switzerland. A recently discovered String Quintet by the Belgian composer Eugène Ysaÿe is the centerpiece, broodingly performed by a Masin-led group of players. An evocative Légende by Ysaÿe’s teacher Henryk Wieniawski also features, and there are interesting pieces by both Wieniawski’s daughter and his brother. Irène Wieniawska contributes three delightful piano miniatures and a strutting Tango for violin and piano, while Józef’s Valse-caprice has a glinting charm and humor. George Enescu’s 7 Chansons de Clément Marot complete this enterprising, excellently played collection.
