Tim Hicks serves up another dose of rowdy country rock on the Ontario singer-songwriter’s fifth studio album. Channeling contemporaries like Eric Church and Jon Pardi, Hicks crafts a collection of arena-rock anthems and tender ballads, with narrative lyrics and some of his strongest vocal work yet. On “Dodge out of Hell,” Hicks employs clever wordplay to offer a fresh take on a truck song, with the truck in question helping the woman at the song’s heart escape a dangerous situation. “Loved Them First” finds connection in nostalgia, as Hicks shares loves of his own—like Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska and “straight tequila”—inspired by important figures in his life. And on the title track, Hicks considers an age-old dilemma: the passage of time and our inability to slow it down.
