The Power Of The Dog (Soundtrack From The Netflix Film)

Jonny Greenwood’s evolution from rock guitarist to one of the more reliably interesting film composers in Hollywood is one of the great arcs in modern music. Like the Jane Campion movie it accompanies, The Power of the Dog is a stark, sometimes alien evocation of the American West: banjo-ish plucking (“25 Years,” “Figured It Out”), dissonant hymns (“Psalm 22”), a saloon piano gone haywire (“Detuned Mechanical Piano”). Even when the soundtrack is at its prettiest (“So Soft,” “West Alone”), Greenwood doesn’t let you rest long—a quality that makes the homey tropes in the music that much more interesting of a contrast. Remember: Cowboys called it the frontier because they’d never experienced anything like it.
