Many a Mile

Many a Mile

Few bands survive long enough to make a 16th album; even fewer get there sounding as tight and timeless as Blue Rodeo do on Many a Mile. Sure, the Toronto country-rock kingpins are fully conscious of their veteran status: The first words we hear Greg Keelor croon on the record are “not a lot of days left in this life.” But while the song on which they appear, “When You Were Wild,” is steeped in nostalgia for better times, the band’s pedal-steeled sweep and saloon-door-swinging sway feel as vibrant and engaging as ever. In classic Rodeo fashion, Many a Mile offsets Keelor’s natural grit with partner Jim Cuddy’s eminent grace on a track-by-track basis, as the latter pads his bottomless canon of harmony-rich hooks with “I Will Wait for You” and “I Think About You” (perhaps the first song to invoke “late-night poutine” as a prelude to romance). Yet as much as it leans toward the tried and true, Many a Mile yields glorious moments when Blue Rodeo venture off the beaten path: “Symmetry of Starlight” is a heavenly hit of psychedelic soft-rock, while the absolutely gorgeous “Julie Is Painting” is a six-minute sundazed reverie illuminated by CSNY-style vocals and a beautifully drifting piano solo.
