drinking under the streetlights - EP

B.C.’s Isaiah Faber—aka Powfu—scored the ultimate bummer anthem of 2020 with his beabadoobee-sampling sad-rap smash “death bed (coffee for your head).” Judging by this four-song follow-up, his mood hasn’t gotten much sunnier. drinking under the streetlights finds Powfu once again opening up about his anxieties and insecurities with his acoustic pop-punky melodies, but a more expansive production palette provides for more color and dramatic tension than his lo-fi beats normally allow. “the long way home” follows the “death bed” template by farming out its chorus hook to a female voice—in this case, rising Nashville alt-pop star Sara Kays—but positions its scenes of domestic unrest in a percussive surge that takes on all the splendor of a Coldplay anthem. And while the Travis Barker-assisted “mario kart” presents an unsparing portrait of alcoholism, heartache, and mind-numbing video game addiction, the song’s sprightly synth-pop momentum makes Powfu’s tribulations feel oddly triumphant.
