Award-winning German pianist Fabian Müller offers a cleverly thought-out program on Passionato, on which he delves into the feelings that living through the global coronavirus pandemic has prompted. Linking Schumann’s Sonata No. 2 with Beethoven’s Appassionata, and given perspective by autumnal Brahms and the craggy darkness of Wolfgang Rihm, Müller paints a portrait of a strange period that questions and challenges, but which also gives hope. Music may have been silenced, he seems to say, but its power is too great to suppress.
