Welcome to La Maison Noir, a collective of immigrants and outcasts guided by Yannick Illunga (Petite Noir) and Rha! Rha!’s “noirwave”. Over six short tracks, they launch a flamboyantly energetic exodus into a new world of self-expression with a stark assertion: “Started with a prayer and a big dream”. The jewels in Petite Noir’s noirwave crown include Danny Brown, whose frenzied verse punctuates the watery electronic pulse of “Beach”; and rapper and poet Saul Williams, who takes direct aim at colonisers and their indelible legacy on “Blowing Up the Congo”.
