During American Idol's farewell season, Trent Harmon sang a cover of Sia’s “Chandelier” that made the judges jaws drop. And rightfully so. With stunning precision, the newcomer captured the power, intimacy, and range of one of the most inventive vocalists of our time. It’s no wonder Nashville’s top-tier studio hands (like Justin Ebach, Jimmy Robbins, and Scott Borchetta) rushed to work on his debut album, a shining take on contemporary country rooted in Delta blues. It’s bundled in bright, polished production (“First Five Minutes”) and Harmon’s wide-eyed charm (“There’s a Girl”), but never feels slick or overcooked. Even the closer (yep, “Chandelier”) feels as moving as the first time.
