Live (feat. The E-Collective)

Following up 2015's Breathless, a reference to the death of Eric Garner, trumpeter Terence Blanchard and his E-Collective issue live recordings from Minneapolis, Cleveland, and Dallas—three cities impacted by gun violence. The music is intense thanks to drummer Oscar Seaton and new bassist David Ginyard, with Blanchard using scorching horn effects (“Kaos” is aptly named). Yet guitarist Charles Altura lends a shimmering quality with his rock-inflected parts and solos (“Soldiers”). Fabian Almazan’s piano provides an elegant acoustic texture throughout, notably on the closing “Choices.”
