10 Songs, 43 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

While the Joy Division catalog is perfect just as it is, there's always room for its former members to revisit its genius. Nothing will surpass the original recordings’ note-perfect elocution, and one should own at barest minimum Unknown Pleasures and Closer before venturing here. However, Peter Hook provided the unusual lead-bass parts that gave Joy Division’s music a rhythmic and melodic edge, and here he re-creates the original songs’ magic, working with former Happy Mondays backing singer and X-Factor star Rowetta on three tracks. Hook himself adds vocals to "Pictures in My Mind," a newly discovered unfinished tune from 1977. Should any vocalist not named Ian Curtis offend your Joy Division memory, there are also instrumental versions of the tracks. If you're a fan of Rowetta, there are two versions of "Atmosphere" that let you hear her vocals both treated and raw.
