Burning Lights

Burning Lights

For years, Chris Tomlin has brought his talents to worship-based projects like Passion as well as his solo endeavors. His ability to place his passions and messages in the framework of guitar-based pop songs is displayed with verve on Burning Lights. Songs like "Awake My Soul" and "Lay Me Down" sound like the work of post–"With or Without You" U2 or Coldplay in their pleading deliveries and sky-scraping arrangements. "God's Great Dance Floor" is a tasteful, guitar-driven number that uses a house music pulse in an organic setting. Tomlin is first and foremost a deliverer of messages of faith, and his purest moments (on songs like the piano-and-vocal "Shepherd Boy") are also some of the album's best.
