Classic Holiday Fare
Every year I look for this beyond funny episode - the Santa Land Diaries by David Sedaris and Christmas Freud by David Rakoff are crying laughing. This American Life produces some of the best spoken word on radio. If you ever get a chance to see David Sedaris in 'concert' in person, don't miss him.
Never has the absurdity surrounding us during the holiday season been so accurately and amusingly described. It is, at the same time, discouraging and comforting, like a holiday dinner with the extended family!
This is the episode that caught my attention (and instantly made a fan of me) one December while "station-surfing" the radio on a road-trip so many years ago. It is the perfect introduction to the brilliance of "This American Life", and the standard to which all other TAL episodes strive to meet.
This belongs with the usual Christmas classics- It's a Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Christmas Carol, The Grinch, etc. It's just that good.
Truly, a classic
My wife and I were listening to a This American Life rebroadcast of David Sedaris's "Santaland" (Act 2, about 5 minutes in) and nearly drove off the road we were laughing so hard. As soon as I could, found an audio copy to keep forever -- and to replay every Christmas!
