About Cuppy

Among the more patriotic Nigerian DJ/producers, Cuppy leaned on samples from Yoruba star Tunji Oyelana for her declarative 2013 debut single, “I Love My Country". Likewise, Cuppy’s 2021 debut album, Original Copy, kicks off with sincere testimony to her identity as a native of Epe, a town in Lagos State. Born in 1992, Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, the daughter of billionaire oil magnate Femi Otedola, moved to London at age 13. Rather than join her father's business upon her return to Nigeria, however, she opted to dedicate herself to music—first as a DJ, then as a producer. In 2014, she released her first House of Cuppy mixtape, giving EDM remixes to Afropop hits, before going on to combine poptastic electro-house and Afrobeats in the grooves of Original Copy. That record includes guest appearances by numerous Afrobeats hitmakers, as well as jùjú-music icon Sir Shina Peters on the track "54", named for the number of African nations.
