Essential Albums
- Having already earned street cred during her stint with the Latin rap collective Makiza, Ana Tijoux digs deep into her psyche on this breakthrough 2010 album, her second release as a solo artist. The Paris-reared daughter of Chilean exiles who escaped the Pinochet dictatorship, Tijoux explores themes of loss, loyalty, injustice and identity here. The occasional French raps (“Oulala”) give the album a worldly sophistication, while the sparse, jazzy production throughout is a nod to ’90s-era New York hip-hop.

About Ana Tijoux
Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux initially established herself in the Latin American hip-hop underground as a member of the pioneering group Makiza during the late '90s. She found much more widespread success several years later as a solo artist and guest rapper, though, most notably on "Eres Para Mí," a 2006 collaboration with Julieta Venegas that was a smash hit throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Tijoux released her full-length solo debut, Kaos, in 2007, and her breakthrough album, 1977, arrived in 2010. She followed with the hit La Bala in 2011 and the star-studded Vengo in 2014. Tijoux spent the next decade recording singles, contrbutiing to soundtracks, and collaborating with others including Jorge Drexler, Clara Peya, and Arturo O'Farrill. She returned to full-length recording with 2024's Vida, produced by Andrés Celis.
