The Gap Band

The Gap Band

Formed in Tulsa by brothers Charlie, Ronnie and Robert Wilson, the Gap Band grew from jazz roots and ruled the R&B charts through the '80s. Though they scored a few mellower hits (notably "Outstanding"), their real trademark was their hard funk numbers, complete with deep synth basslines, gospel-infused vocals and outlandish lyrics. Even the titles of their trademark hits, "Oops, Upside Your Head" and "You Dropped a Bomb On Me," became catchphrases on every dance floor. Charlie Wilson began a solo career in 1992, earning a new generation of fans by collaborating with Snoop Dogg and Justin Timberlake.
