RL Grime (aka LA’s Henry Steinway) has always made some of dance music’s most over-the-top tracks. But PLAY, his third proper full-length, takes his everything-and-more philosophy to new heights. Twenty-four tracks are spread across three “discs” (if you can imagine them), each representing a different aspect of his sound: stuff for the festival, stuff you might even sing along to and stuff that burrows a bit deeper into the psyche. For his picks for Selects—the playlist in which DJs and producers share their favourite tunes of any given moment—he put together “a collection of tracks that inspired me greatly during the process of making my PLAY,” he tells Apple Music. That means a few tracks from PLAY to get you oriented, a chunk of woofer-testing jams from his Sable Valley label and other picks from across the more atmospheric side of the bass, trap and drum ’n’ bass spectrum.
