Not content to found just one of Detroit techno's defining labels, as he did with Underground Resistance, DJ/producer Jeff Mills took things further when, more than 30 years ago, he also launched his own Axis Records imprint. Relentless, punishing techno (primarily produced by himself and fellow UR alum Robert Hood) would of course be the order of the day, but as time went on, the label would fully embrace the music’s jazzier, funkier, more exploratory side as well. Looking back on those three decades, Mills assembled this special set of Selects—the playlist in which the world’s best DJs and producers share their favourite tracks—as “a testament to our dedication and focus on pushing electronic forward”, he tells Apple Music. “It's an updated overview of the label’s persistent creative journey to broaden its brand for the wider view from electronic music as well as recognising the value in diversity in the musical soundscape.” Hear all his Selects, and add any favourites to your library.
