Montserrat Caballé Essentials

Montserrat Caballé was one of the most powerful and versatile operatic voices of the 20th century. Best known for her roles in Italian opera (Tosca, Aida, Violetta in Verdi's La traviata, Turandot and Elisabeth in Don Carlos), Caballé's repertoire took in German works such as Tristan und Isolde, Salome and Der Rosenkavalier. Possessing a beautifully pure soprano voice, primarily lyric but with reserves of power, Caballé (born in Barcelona in 1933) became one of Spain's leading musicians. Her many early solo recitals reveal a superb instrument, which can be heard in pretty much all her stage roles—often to spectacular effect. “Barcelona”, a duet recorded with Freddie Mercury for the 1992 Olympics, made her a crossover star. Explore some of the finest performances of an opera legend.
