Explosions in the Sky Essentials

Texas' Explosions in the Sky create post-rock as expansive as the Lone Star State itself. Each instrumental is slowly, meticulously erected with the moodiness and precision of a classical composition, then shaped with multiple guitars. The gentle, minor-key plucks of 1999's "Magic Hours" show them at their most minimal, but by 2007's All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, they proved themselves masters of cinematic catharsis—"The Birth and Death of the Day" has guitars that simmer, squeal and sprint through pounding percussion, only to reach serenity via exhaustion.
