Phil Campbell

About Phil Campbell

b. Scotland. Despite being raised in a devoutly religious family, this Scottish singer-songwriter and guitarist embraced a secular existence as a rebellious teen. He began performing at clubs in Glasgow and made enough waves to land a development deal with WEA Records at the age of 18. His excellent 1997 debut, Fresh New Life, was released via EMI Records, and earned good advance notices in the music press. Unfortunately, his contract with EMI was quickly severed owing to the singer’s rather unstable personal life and the album disappeared from the shelves. Campbell spent the next few years straightening his life out and recording two albums with the rock band White Buffalo, which featured musicians who had helped him record his debut album. Campbell returned to the EMI stable when he signed a new contract with the Safehouse imprint. His second album was recorded at the artist’s home studio with Campbell playing every instrument except the bass himself. Released at the end of 2007, Joy staked out a mellower direction than his debut album and embraced a more mature outlook on life. This direction was maintained on the quickly released follow-up, After The Garden, which saw Campbell straying into David Gray territory.
