About Giacomo Puccini

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) composed some of the most beloved operas of all time, including La bohème, Tosca, and Madame Butterfly, which are at the core of the repertoire. He was considered Verdi's successor as the next great Italian opera composer. Puccini's mature works incorporated the naturalistic, often melodramatic elements of verismo opera. He was especially gifted in writing memorably for the voice, and his music is notable for its warm, expansive lyricism, and for its unabashed emotionality, theatricality, and passion. Other important operas include Manon Lescaut, Gianni Schicchi, and Turandot, which he left incomplete at his death.
