The nervous chaos of everyday stress inspired Goth Jafar’s exclusive mix for Pride 2023—right down to the actual creation of it. “I was in my friend Mark’s apartment a day before my flight took off to go to Berlin to start off my Euro tour,” the NYC-based artist tells Apple Music. “My brain was scattered, anxiety-ridden [and] struck with inspiration on the final hours of a deadline, elated with bliss that it came off.” The mix emits that perpetual chaos alongside a sultry party that’s perfect for all things Pride. “I hope the mix conveys the essence of the rush of getting ready to head out the door,” says Goth Jafar, aka Suffy Baala. “A flat iron is on the floor, [with] makeup scattered in a scene of havoc as you run to the Uber that came earlier than expected to stay out all night till the sunrise, surrounded by loved ones or by divine timing. The nights that are not planned end up being the most magical, teleporting you to unexpected dance floors, sensual encounters with strangers, sweat, fog and lasers.” She dedicates the mix to her fellow trans women—both those who helped her on her way and those who have yet to arrive themselves—and to her late friend Harvey Parker. Asked to single out one song in particular, Baala points to Kaskade and deadmau5’s “Move for Me”, describing it as timeless and uplifting. “Listening to this when I was younger was one of the many gateways that led me to electronic music,” she explains. “The fantasy of being in a nightclub where you are completely free to be yourself is where this song takes me. Pride is a celebration of loving yourself in a world that is designed to hate you. Being in a nightclub is sadly sometimes the only place where you can shed the skin of the world and be free.”
