Tracey Thorn Essentials

Tracey Thorn has been at the forefront of intelligent indie-pop since the early ‘80s, her knack for pairing wry lyrics with searing emotion cementing her standing as the rarest of phenomena: a genuinely cerebral pop star. She's alternately a devotee of twinkling, folk-inflected balladry—as on Everything But the Girl's devastating 1988 cover of “I Don't Want to Talk About It”—and euphoric, glimmering dance music, as on EBtG's 1994 smash “Missing” or her 2018 sojourn into synthy, feminist disco, “Queen”. But it's her lush, wistful voice that ties it all together.
