The anti-idol movement has developed a fierce following in Tokyo. Beneath the surface sheen of J-pop’s sunshine bops, BiSH lurk in the shadows, packing enough visceral punk-rock energy to rip assumptions to shreds. Formed in 2015, the group have fronted anime soundtracks and scored a chart-topping hit with 2018 single “PAiNT it BLACK”. It’s a success that belies their stubbornly anti-establishment sound. Snarling punk anthem “Sharr” is death to the dreary nine-to-five, while early career cut “Spark” is pop-rock infused with gritty guitar and bittersweet vocals—the sound of perfect chaos.
