Jaheim Essentials

Discovered by DJ Kay Gee of Naughty By Nature, Jaheim has an R&B purist's heart and a streetwise mind. This contrast is summed up by his 2001 serenade “Ghetto Love”, a husky-voiced song of frank carnality conveyed via a contemporary R&B slow jam. The parole-referencing “Put That Woman First”—a revision of William Bell's ‘70s soul apology “I Forgot to Be Your Lover”—also shows his sagacious soulfulness. Later, he'd change his tune to favour finesse over edginess: 2010's compelling “Finding My Way Back” is a Motown-style ballad that trades the club for a hotel bar.
