From the soil of South London, rapper Teeway sprouted in the late 2010s. Rapping with a calculated urgency and writerly eye, he innovated atop the cold surfaces of UK drill, keeping the genre alive as it threatened to stagnate due to changing tastes and police pressure. Born in South Norwood, Teeway was always drawn to music through his family, which included rappers and engineers, and he fell in love with Chief Keef and Chicago drill as a teenager. The gothic cloud of that music looms over his own. He started putting out music in 2018, and his whirring 2019 song “Feeling It” reached a wide audience after it soundtracked the third series of Top Boy. On the 2020 posse cut “Year Of The Real”, he proved his staying power, going bar-for-bar with drill stalwarts Pa Salieu, Meekz and M1llionz. His 2021 EP 5th Chapter keeps a true UK drill sound, a marker of this genre’s staying power and Teeway’s mastery of it.
