About Ryan Downing

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I have been exposed to music my entire life. My dad and lyric collaborator Mitch Downing showed me basic chords on the guitar when I was nine. I picked up the rest myself. Dad also discovered I had absolute pitch when I was eleven. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Chris Bell, I Am the Cosmos The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot These albums have inspired me immensely over the years. When I was thirteen, I would nonstop play "Pet Sounds" for weeks trying to decipher Brian Wilson's gorgeous melodies and production techniques. "YHF" and "Cosmos" have been influential recently. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Turn Back Time” I wrote the music for this haunting tune when I was in a band called Hazy Daze. The melancholic music and idealistic lyrics I wrote after the band ended vividly express my feelings at that time. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I was featured in Relix Magazine twice. First in their December 2021 issue with a version of my song "Candy Cane," then in March 2022 with a song I collaborated on with smooth jazz trumpeter and vocalist David Jones called "Get Back Up." Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I think every artist should aspire to achieve larger goals, no matter how successful they are. They should set their ambitions high and release what they love. Art as a whole is about self-expression. Push forward with your music and don't look back.
