Award-winning Indian singer and multi-instrumentalist Jasleen Royal is known for her work across an array of languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujurati and English. • Born in 1991, Royal taught herself to play guitar at a young age, showing signs of the resourcefulness that would go on to define her work. • Royal first came to national attention when she appeared on India’s Got Talent in 2009. She reached the semi-finals, with the judges praising her as a one-woman band. • Her ability to play a number of different instruments is a cornerstone of her sound—as well as guitar, Royal boasts a mastery of harmonica, keyboard and flute. She’s known to use tambourine while singing, too. • Royal has won several awards honouring her independent spirit, including Best Indie Song at the MTV Video Music Awards India in 2013 for her debut track, “Panchi Hojavan”. • She has ventured into Bollywood, contributing to the score for 2020 Hindi comedy Ghoomketu and becoming a staunch advocate for musicians’ rights within the film industry.
