EDITORS’ NOTES

The main indication that Earth, Wind & Fire’s gorgeously triumphant Now, Then, and Forever was recorded in 2013 and not in the band's ‘70s heyday is the copyright date. EWF's first album after the retirement of mastermind Maurice White is as effortlessly soulful and finely crafted as ever. Unlike 2005's cameo-filled Illumination, Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson keep things in the family here, with minimal guest appearances. The rollicking, horn-driven groove of the single "My Promise" is a particular delight.
