Brooklyn-based indie rock band Market play an easygoing variety of introspective pop that's melodic and bittersweet while possessing a faint uneasiness about the world around them. Led by producer and multi-instrumentalist Nate Mendelsohn, Market's music sounds open and organic in its straightforward melodies, hints of folky jangle, and unfussy and affecting harmony vocals, all the while allowing his experimental impulses to lurk in the background. The group showed off a homespun charm that dovetailed with their shadowy side on their home-recorded debut, 2016's Not Good at Spending Time Alone a.k.a. Cleanliness. By the time they released 2022's The Consistent Brutal Bullshit Gong, Market sounded tighter and more mature, and had learned to make use of the studio without abandoning their rumpled sonic personality.
