Having Sting for a father could overshadow anybody’s talent, but on Eliot Sumner’s solo debut, she emits a light all her own. There are some vocal similarities to her dad, but that’s where the parallels cease. Delivered in Sumner’s husky voice, her edgy, propulsive alt-rock tunes are filled with vivid, poetic imagery and framed by a blend of atmospheric keyboard textures and razor-sharp guitar riffs. Whether unfurling raw rockers (“Halfway to Hell”) or more stately settings (“Dead Arms & Dead Legs”), she establishes an identity all her own.
