Deck the halls and don your holiday apparel—’tis the season for Mariah Carey’s Christmas Time tour. The yuletide queen tells Apple Music that all she wants for Christmas this year is to spend this time with her fans, bringing cheer to new places and faces. She describes the show's over-the-top atmosphere as “festive, celebratory, joyous, happy, jolly, jovial”—you get the gist—but notes that it isn't without reflection. “There will also be poignant moments, because there’s a variety of moods in my songs and at the holidays,” she says. Onstage, Carey wraps up seasonal standards like “O Holy Night”, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and “Joy to the World” along with her new classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (which is turning 30!) and much more. (There’s even room for her non-Christmassy smashes like “Hero”, “Fantasy” and “Always Be My Baby”.) And while the pop icon is a Christmas pro, even she can’t predict everything that will happen onstage this season. “That’s the fun thing about touring—you never know what fans are going to react to,” she explains. “It can be a well-rehearsed moment or it can be a random moment that I wasn’t prepared for,” she says, recalling that time she mopped the stage because it was raining (“We created a song on the spot and everyone loved it”). So haul out the holly, string up your lights and dig into this festive set list.
