Mura Masa's Alex Crossan grew up on the small island of Guernsey, but it's multicultural London that informs his hybrid style, in which hip-hop, electronic and futurist pop collide in a cloud of globe-spanning samples. “Lotus Eater”, from his 2014 debut album, layers Asian flute over crisp trap beats; the 2017 single “Wave” applies his cut-and-paste aesthetic to minimalist grime. His pop instincts are even clearer on “1 Night”, a bittersweet sing-along draping Charli XCX's chirpy vocals over colourful steel drums, and “All Around the World”, where Desiigner's commanding hook lends polish to a bold, exuberant beat.
