With technical chops and imagination to spare, they evinced funk, Beat poetry and jazz influences and championed the DIY philosophy. The tragic car-crash death of guitarist D. Boon in 1985 ended the band, but they inspired everyone from big stars Jane's Addiction and Pearl Jam to cult figures Pinback and NoMeansNo.
