Founded by irrepressible frontman Eugene Hütz in 1999, Gypsy punk outfit Gogol Bordello started out playing it straight as a klezmer band for Russian weddings. Their sound soon exploded outwards to include dub reggae and post-punk, and in the early '00s they found themselves at the centre of a raging downtown NYC scene. In the years to follow, their extensive touring was buoyed by hugely kinetic performances that bordered on joyous rioting both onstage and off. The band entered the '10s with an unmatched reputation for electric eclecticism and a massive international fanbase.
