Count Basie: Deep Cuts

Count Basie: Deep Cuts

Styles change, but Basie had a way of seeming forever young; both he and Tony Bennett embody this quality on their swinging collaboration “Are You Havin' Any Fun?”. And on 1945's “Avenue C”, Basie's early band produced a joyously hip energy that hasn't dated. The Count could also adapt; he pushed tempos in the era of post-bop, as on “Whirly Bird”, without losing his classic sense of ease.
