About Pearl Bailey
After entering show business as a dancer, singer Pearl Bailey would go on to take the early-1940s New York nightclub scene by storm. An uninhibited performer, she made an accomplished debut on Broadway in the 1946 Arlen-Mercer musical ST. LOUIS WOMAN. A year later she stole the show in the movie VARIETY GIRL with her sultry version of “Tired.” Although her records never sold particularly well, Bailey scored a genuine hit with 1952’s “Takes Two To Tango,” and remained a top draw as a live performer and actress. She earned a Tony for her performance in an all-black cast version of HELLO, DOLLY!, and was a notable personality until her death in 1990.
