About The Coral Sea

A California-based indie rock group led by singer/songwriter Rey Villalobos, the Coral Sea emerged in the mid-2000s with a sumptuous style that blends the lush, orchestral side of 1960s pop and strident '70s British glam with the modern sensibilities of atmosphere-driven art-rockers like Mercury Rev and Radiohead. Since debuting with 2006's full-length Volcano and Heart, the band have issued an EP and a second long-player, 2008's Firelight. In addition to his work with the group, Villalobos has released a string of ambient folk albums under the moniker House of Wolves. Formed in 2004 by Villalobos, the Coral Sea's debut recording, Volcano and Heart, was backed by a classical string quartet and released through Red Clover Records in mid-2006. The LP spawned the single "Look at Her Face," which appeared on the Grey's Anatomy season-two finale. Three years later, the Coral Sea landed another song in the popular TV medical drama, "Ah, Ah, Ah," which appeared on their sophomore full-length effort, Firelight. 2010 saw the release of the EP Play Me, and in 2011 Villalobos issued his first album as House of Wolves, Fold in the Wind. 2013 saw the Coral Sea's cover version of Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?" appear in an episode of the HBO series Californication. Two more House of Wolves LPs, Daughter of the Sea and House of Wolves, arrived in 2015 and 2016, respectively, and in 2020, the Coral Sea released an early demo version of the Volcano and Heart track "Yesterday Tomorrow." ~ James Christopher Monger
